The first rally's were drives over large distances often between big cities in Europe. De race wold take competitors over public roads that they share with others. One large race was held for the first time in 1899 and was called Le Tour du France. It was held over 18 times before public road races were banned.
Todays Rally races are mostly held in an area where competitors return to a basecamp after the rally for the next stages to following day. Different is the Dakar Rally where the camp moves with the competitors over large distances.
Most famous are the Dakar and Monte Carlo rally's that have fans all over the wordt. Recent addition is popular WRX rallycros where competitors drive there monsters over a short closed circuit that is made up of a strech of asphalt and some dirt-track pieces.
