Verstappen, Jos

Dutch boy Jos Verstappen started out in the kart and was very good at it. Dutch Junior champion in 1984 and European champion in 1989. So successful that manager Rothengatter managed to secure him a seat at Benetton F1 as a test driver. With Lehto hurt in an accident on Monza Jos was allowed to start in Brasil and show his skills before being pushed of the track bij Eddy Irvine and crashed.

Although Verstappen showed great promise and speed, he was never able to get a seat at a team that could give him the car he needed and deserved. After years of frustration and bad luck he left Formula One to return in 2008 with the team of Peter van Merkensteijn to compete in the World Endurance Championship with Jeroen Bleekemolen and Peter van Merkensteijn as co-drivers. The won all but one races that year including the Le Mans 24 hours with their Porsche RS Spyder LMP2.

He is the father of Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen, but has stepped back from an active role in guiding his sons career. He is now a consultant for CRG Karts.
